Everything on SoundCloud can now be flattred

Last year we started working with SoundCloud to add the ability for artists to add Flattr buttons directly in the SoundCloud player. Now we are happy to announce that we have taken this one step further in making all SoundCloud tracks and users flattrable.

To get started, simply download our browser extension for Chrome or Firefox, start browsing SoundCloud, and when you find something you like, just click the Flattr button in the top right corner.

So how does this work? What happens with the money if a SoundCloud user is not signed up with Flattr yet? The answer is simple: the money (or clicks) stays in a pending state until the artist signs up with Flattr and connects their SoundCloud account.

If you are a developer, perhaps making a music player that can play SoundCloud tracks, it is very easy to integrate a Flattr button that works for all tracks on SoundCloud. Just include the Flattr API script in your HTML and place an <a class=”FlattrButton” href=”…”>  tag wherever you want a Flattr button to appear.

For example, this button will Flattr a SoundCloud track:

<a href=”http://soundcloud.com/mosaik/goflykite-final”></a>

… and this will Flattr a user:

<a href=”http://soundcloud.com/mosaik”></a>

Note that you only provide a URL – Flattr takes care of looking up the correct title and description and makes sure that only the correct artist can claim the money waiting for them.

    This is great!
How will the artist now that he has pending flattrs? Is there any good way of telling them (comment on the track)?

  2. Per Thulin says:

Melpomene: not yet. The best we can do at the moment is to watch for trending SoundCloud artists in our catalog, find their twitter account, and tweet them!

GREAT NEWS! My favorite two sites has just married!

  6. Thilo says:

Cool. And once they join Flattr (and tell Soundcloud about it), the Flattr buttons will appear on Soundcloud for the world to see without the browser extension, right?

  7. Per Thulin says:

Thilo, yes, if the artist chooses to set their “buy link” to a Flattr URL, a Flattr button will appear in the SoundCloud player. Artists can do this easily for all their tracks using our tool found in https://flattr.com/settings/connections (click “Submit tracks” next to your connected SoundCloud account).

I use Safari. Any plans for a Safari extension?

I installed the Firefox extension. Firefox then crashed, but the extension appeared, enabled, in Add-Ons Manager. I could not see a Flattr button in the address bar, even when on Soundcloud.com. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the extension, but the outcome was the same. Am I doing something wrong? I’m using Firefox 11.0.
